Almodôvar joined forces against illegal use of poison in a street campaign

On June the 5th, during World Environment Day, the educational community of Almodôvar joined in a street campaign to raise awareness against the illegal use of poison in nature.

The students of Almodôvar Primary School elaborated various leaflets alluding to the dangers associated with the illegal use of poisons in nature in order to distribute them throughout the day in the streets of Almodôvar. The places visited, chosen by the students themselves, aimed to reach as many people as possible. So they visited the Municipal Market and the Town Hall in the morning and the streets with more commerce inside this locality in the afternoon.

Sensitive to the cause, the students approached the people in a very friendly way to explain the reason for the campaign and the purpose of this event dedicated to the environment, always accompanied by the LIFE Imperial project technicians and a GNR / SEPNA military.

Poisoning is currently one of the greatest threats to species that feed on dead bodies, even if they do so only occasionally, as is the case with the imperial-Iberian eagle. This illegal practice also affects domestic animals, which may even affect humans, and is a public health problem. The use of poisons is often associated with hunting and farming activities, resulting from illegal control of wild predators or feral dogs, and conflicts between people.

The campaign to raise awareness against the illegal use of poisons ended in the late afternoon with a demonstration by one of the GNR's teams for the detection of poison in a public park, open to the entire local population. Here it was possible to observe how Yellow and Susy, the dogs of this GNR team, how they patrol for cases of poisoning in the territory of the imperial eagle.

This awareness campaign for the general public was supported by the Municipality of Almodôvar, GNR / SEPNA, GNR / GIC and the Department of the primary school of Almodôvar.
