LPN – Liga para a Protecção da Natureza

LPN is an environmental, non-profit, non-governmental organization (NGO) with public utility statute. It was founded in 1948, being the oldest NGO in the Iberian Peninsula. A national organization, its mission is to contribute to the conservation of nature, biodiversity, and ecosystem protection through the implementation of conservation projects and research, environmental education and formation.

With vast experience in the implementation of LIFE Nature projects, LPN is responsible for the implementation and global coordination of the LIFE Saramugo project. The project team is based at the Centro de Educação Ambiental do Vale Gonçalinho (CEAVG), in Castro Verde.

GNR – Guarda Nacional Republicana

The National Republican Guard is a security force of military nature, composed of military elements organized in a special troops corps, with administrative autonomy. Its mission is to ensure the democratic rule of law, domestic security and the rights of citizens, as well as to collaborate in police reinforcement of national defence per the terms of the Constitution and Legislation.



ICNF - Instituto da Conservação da Natureza e das Florestas, IP

The Institute for Nature Conservation and Forests (ICNF) is a public entity under the tutelage of the Ministry of Agriculture, Sea, Environment and Spatial Planning, responsible for the implementation of nature conservation policies and forests, and for the management of the National Network of Protected Areas.

Among its competencies are: the development of national nature conservation, biodiversity and forestry policies, and their integration with other policies, ensuring the sustainable management of wild fauna and flora species and natural resources; the classification and management of protected areas and areas of the Natura 2000 network; the implementation of the National Strategy for Nature and Biodiversity Conservation and the National Forest Strategy; the definition and execution of the National Forest Policy, at different levels, including hunting, forestry and its sustainability; the development and management of a surveillance and management system of natural resources; the promotion of information, visits and awareness-raising of the public and institutions to nature and biodiversity; the proposal of regulations related to the access to wild genetic resources and its benefits, in collaboration with other competent authorities; ensure the compliance with international and community law in matters of Nature Conservation and Biodiversity.



EDP Distribuição – Energia, S.A.

EDP Distribuição - Energia, S.A. is the holder of an open-ended binding license for electricity distribution through medium- and high-voltage electricity in mainland Portugal. It is also the concessionaire for almost all the low-voltage distribution network, in accordance with concession contracts with municipalities. As a concessionary, EDP Distribuição - Energia, S.A. exploits, manages and develops the distribution network of low-, medium- and high-voltage in mainland Portugal, using installations that integrate public utilities. EDP Distribuição - Energia, S.A. coordinates the execution of environmental projects resulting from its activities.


In mainland Portugal, there are more than 174 thousand kilometres of electric power lines, and of these, 18% are medium- and high-voltage lines running through classified areas. Recognizing the potential environmental impact of these power lines on birds, EDP Distribuição has paid special attention to this subject, and for this reason, has implemented voluntarily since 2003 conventional and new technical solutions for minimizing impacts such as collisions and electrocutions, in more than 430 kilometres of power lines of medium- and high-voltage



CMCV - Câmara Municipal de Castro Verde

The Castro Verde Municipal Chamber is a local authority with competencies in the areas of spatial planning and promotion of correct land use, as well as the administrative authority in several competency areas. It is a collective person with representative branches (Municipal Chamber and Municipal Assembly) which aims to promote public interest. In the framework of environmental awareness-raising, the Castro Verde Municipal Chamber has been collaborating with LPN for the protection of the habitat of threatened species, namely in the classification of the Special Protection Area of Castro Verde and in the promotion of the Natura 2000 Network.



FCUL - Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa

The Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon is a higher education public institution created in 1911, which offers 13 undergraduate degrees, 38 postgraduate degrees and three integrated Masters programmes. In the field of research, it has more than two hundred ongoing projects, and research activities take place in 30 laboratories and research centres or institutes, encompassing a variety of domains in Science and Technology. Many of these activities are carried out in collaboration with international teams and financed at national and European level. Research activities mainly take place in the following areas: Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Statistics and Operational Research, Physics, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Geology, Geophysics and Astronomy, Biology, Computing Sciences, Philosophy and Science History. Thus, FCUL is a renowned institution in the fields of teaching and research, aiming to promote teaching quality and develop competitive research units, both at national and international levels. FCUL has therefore always favoured the interchange and collaboration between researchers and international research centres, many of which remain involved with the Faculty through joint research projects.



SEO/BirdLife - Sociedad Española de Ornitología

SEO/BirdLife is a non-profit NGO pioneer in the conservation of nature and biodiversity in Spain. Its main goal is to conserve birds and their habitat, also contributing to the conservation of global biodiversity. It has successfully carried out several LIFE projects for the conservation of priority species and habitats in Spain, as well as other countries (Morocco).  SEO/BirdLife belongs to the NGO network BirdLife International, with representatives in 120 countries (including all members of the European Union). Currently, SEO/BirdLife is coordinating the LIFE 08/NAT/E/00062 “Acciones para la lucha contra el uso ilegal de veneno en el Medio Natural en España” with the aim of significantly reducing the illegal use of poison in Spain, which is the main cause of death of threatened species, like the Iberian Imperial Eagle. Since 2006, SEO/BirdLife has coordinated a conservation project on the Iberian Imperial Eagle named "Red de custodia Alzando el Vuelo", that focuses on three important aspects for the conservation of the Iberian Imperial Eagle: Public section, through municipalities, Private section, through land owners, and Education section, through teachers of primary and secondary schools.

Currently, the network counts on the collaboration of about 22,000 ha of private land, more than 125 municipalities and 100 schools with teachers who impart the value of species, habitat and biodiversity conservation to their students. In addition, SEO/BirdLife has been directly involved in drafting the International Action Plan of the species, the National Strategy for the Conservation of the Iberian Imperial Eagle, and is part of the Assessment Committee of the Iberian Imperial Eagle of the Agriculture, Food and Environment Ministry of Spain.



TRAGSATEC - Tecnología y Servicios Agrarios S. A.

Tragsatec is a company belonging to the Tragsa Group, carrying out work for the government, Autonomous Communities and municipalities, through partnerships and acting as instruments of those entities. It has played a role in the field of engineering and technical assistance for rural development and environmental activities, as well as agricultural and forestry activities and in the management of fishery and aquaculture resources since 1989. Tragsatec counts on several departments dedicated to the development of biodiversity conservation programmes, especially on the protection of natural and agricultural resources, technological optimization of natural resource management tasks in service of interested sectors. Thus, it counts on the Quality Management and Environmental Assessment and Biodiversity as well as on a R&D (Integrated Research and Development) Unit, demonstrating a clear commitment to technological innovation, as well as its contribution in the implementation of environmental policies. In this sense, it has a lot of experience in the development of conservation projects for threatened species in the past 15 years, such as the Western Capercaillie, Brown Bear, Iberian Imperial Eagle, European Mink, Bearded Vulture and the Iberian Lynx, contracted by the government. In addition, it participates in the development of conservation strategies and recovery plans for various threatened species, manages and keeps updated inventories and carries out prospections on priority habitat and species throughout the country. It also collaborates in specific studies and develops management actions in priority habitats, and sustainable practices in rural areas. Tragsatec still has experience in participating in LIFE projects. At present it participates as the representative of the Agriculture, Food and Environment Ministry, as an associated beneficiary of the LIFE+ Desmania, LIFE Territorio Visón, LIFE Velif and LIFE CREMAgua.
