PROJECT

The LIFE Imperial Project “Conservation of the Spanish Imperial Eagle (Aquila adalberti) in Portugal” intends to create the conditions for the maintenance and increase of the population of Iberian Imperial Eagle through a series of conservation actions. These actions aim to reduce the impact of the existing threats on the species and improve the sustainability conditions of territories for the maintenance of existing couples and settlement of new couples. These actions target many levels, namely political and spatial planning, direct management of the species, its breeding and feeding habitat, and management and rehabilitation of the main prey species. In addition the project intends to raise awareness of the general public and activity sectors potentially involved in the conservation of the species, always with the direct involvement of interested parties.

The LIFE Imperial Project is an opportunity to re-establish the national population of the Iberian Imperial Eagle, applying some of the recommendations from the European Action Plan for this species. This project therefore intends to be a decisive catalyst for the long-term conservation of this highly threatened species that only breeds in the Iberian Peninsula.
