A
Arm: is a term used to designate the inside of the wing

Autochthonous (species): that originates from the territory where it inhabits (synonym of native or indigenous)

 

B
Birds Directive: refers to the Directive 2009/147/EC that concerns the conservation of all bird species that naturally occur in the wild in European territory in each Member States to which the Treaty applies. Its purpose is to protect, manage, control of these species and regulate their exploitation. In order to achieve this objective, each of those Members States shall take the necessary measures to ensure the protection of the various species of wild birds populations in its territory within the European Union, establishing a general regime for their protection and management.

Cainism: in a reference to the story of Cain and Abel, is a act in which the older offspring attacks the youngest due to food shortages, usually ending up in death of the youngests offsprings.

Conservation status: is a designation or classification given to a species according to the level of threat to extinction

Dark chessboard: designation attributed to the 4th plumage of the imperial eagle
Demographic expansion: is a positive change in the number of individuals in a population

Dispersive movement: refers to displacement performed by immature individuals to identify settlement area or possible territory.

 

E

Endemism: refers to a taxonomic group (for example, a species) that has developed in a restricted region

Exhibition or nuptial parade: is a ritual performed by the animals to identify themselves with others of the same species and that precedes the mating

Extensive cereal cultivation: the cultivation of cereal made ina a open and wide area, produced in a non-intensive way

 

F

Fingers: is a term used to designate the tips of the feathers that are far apart from the outer and longer primary feathers, which are prominent on the tip of the wing.

 

G

Genetic deterioration: refers to the loss of genetic variability with implications on the genetic quality of individuals or alteration of certain adaptive characteristics of the species.

 

H

Habitat: is the natural home or environment of an species within a physical space with biotic and abiotic factors.

Habitats Directive: refers to the Directive 92/43/EEC that concerns the conservation of natural habitats and wild fauna and flora. It aims to contribute for the conservation of natural habitats (Annex I) and species of wild flora and fauna (Annex II), with the exception of birds (protected under the Birds Directive) which are considered to be threatened in the territory of the European Union.

Hand: is a term used to designate the outer part of the wing, the set of primary feathers that stand out on the wing tip

Hemorrhagic fever: is a viral disease that occurs in wild rabbit caused by a calcivirus, the transmission of which can occur through direct or indirect contact and throughout any route - oral, intranasal, intramuscular and intravenous

 

I
Immature: is an individual with plumage previous to sub-adult plumage
Inanition: state of extreme weakness caused by lack of food or dehydration

Lagomorph: is an order of small herbivorous mammals, which includes rabbits and hares

 

M

Mediterranean forest: is an habitat with high floristic diversification, characterized by the presence of typically Mediterranean species such as the Cistus ladanifer, the Genista triacanthos, the olive tree Olea europea var. sylvestris, the Myrtus communis and the oak Quercus rotundifolia.

Monogamy (monogamous species): refers to one unique partner (i.e. each individual mates with only one partner for an extended period of time)

Myxomatosis: is a viral disease that occurs in rabbits caused by a myxovirus (Poxviridae), which is transmitted mainly through mechanical vectors such as fleas and mosquitoes

Natura 2000 network: an ecological network of European Union's Community area resulting from the application of Council Directive 79/409/EEC of 2 April 1979 (the Birds Directive) - repealed by Directive 2009/147/EC of 30 November - and Directive 92/43/EEC (Habitats Directive)
Necrophagy (necrophagous species): refers to species that consumes cadavers (dead animals)

Nesting (species): refers to a species that reproduces in a particular location

Pale chessbosrd: designation attributed to the 3rd plumage of the imperial eagle

Predator generalist: presents a very varied diet

 

R
Rémiges: flight feathers of the wings

Resident (species): not migrating
Retrizes: tail feathers
 

S

Scapular area: area at the back of the shoulder

Sedentary (species): which does not effect dispersal movements

Settlement area: area typically rich in food used regularly by immature birds during part of the year

Silhouette: outline or general shape of a bird

Straw-coloured: its a designation attributed to the 2nd plumage of the imperial eagle

 

T

Territorial (species): that identifies, marks and defends a certain territory

Top predator: it is at the top of the food chain, it occupies the highest trophic level and plays a crucial role in maintaining the health of ecosystems (synonymous with predator or alpha predator)

Trophic resources: food resources

 

W

Wing covers, feathers that cover the wings

Wingspan, refers to the longest distance between the tips of a bird's wings
