CAMPAIGN

Exclusive of the Iberian Peninsula, the Iberian imperial eagle is one of the most endangered birds of prey in Europe and is among the rarest in the world. After an absence as a breeder of about 20 years, the Iberian imperial Eagle returned to Portugal in 2003.

The LIFE Imperial Project was presented in June 2013, when there were only 11 pairs of Iberian imperial eagle in Portugal. In 2020 - seven years later - this Critically Endangered species saw its number more than double, to 24 pairs. LIFE Imperial is a perfect example of the value that a nature conservation project of this scope and with this ambition can bring to Portugal and to the natural heritage of us all.

Spot #1 Persecution

The Iberian imperial eagle is a super predator and preys preferably on weak and sick animals, maintaining the ecological balance. But persecution through illegal use of poison and shooting are, unfortunately, two of its main threats.
The Iberian imperial eagle needs you! Please report situations of persecution and support nature conservation: Linha SOS Ambiente e Território – 808 200 520 (SEPNA/GNR)

Spot #2 Species conservation and Natura 2000 Network

The Iberian imperial eagle is one of the most endangered birds of prey in Europe and is among the rarest in the world. The Natura 2000 Network is, this way, essential for the conservation of the imperial eagle and its habitat. The LIFE Imperial project aimed to contribute to the conservation of this species in the long term, carrying out several actions in the Natura 2000 network.
