HABITAT LOSS

Habitat loss and degradation are caused by the destruction and fragmentation of Mediterranean shrubland and dehesas (in the latter, mainly due to diseases which kill cork trees and holms), plantations (such as eucalyptus plantations), land use changes due to intensification of agricultural practices, infrastructure construction, forest fires and loss of large veteran trees, among others.

These represent a series of threats to the species, since they cause a large reduction in the quality of the feeding areas, through the decline of open hunting grounds, and/or nesting habitat, which result in increasingly rare suitable breeding areas (in terms of the structure of the habitat) and adequate support for nests.
