GOALS

The LIFE Imperial Project will establish tools to ensure the increase of the population of Iberian Imperial Eagle in Portugal, and consequently, of the global population.

Towards that end, the project has the following objectives:

• Promote the conservation of the Iberian Imperial Eagle habitat and potentiate its natural recolonization;

• Improve the quality of the breeding habitat to allow existing pairs to remain there and potentiate the establishment of new pairs;

• Rehabilitate or maintain prey species in the areas where their decline is a limiting factor to the establishment of breeding pairs;

• Reduce the number of factors affecting reproductive success, namely adult and subadult mortality due to electrocution, shooting and poisoning, and disturbance during the breeding season;

• Increase capacity to detect illegal activities such as the use of poison;

• Increase the efficacy of the main agents responsible for the protection of the species (decision-makers, fiscalization and magistrate entities, among others), ensuring its long-term continuity in Portugal;

• Raise public awareness and the awareness of stakeholders, such as the cinegetic sector, forestry and agro-pecuary sectors, land owners, touristic operators and photographers, to the importance of conserving the Iberian Imperial Eagle.
